Bhagavan
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
-People
travel great distances to be close to Sai Baba. Its said that if he
looks you in the eyes your faith increases, you become a
believer as well as a lot more.
SATHYA
SAI BABA was born at Prasanthi Nilayam Puttaparthi
November 23 1926 06:19 am
Indian time. (?)
Lat. 15oN and Long. 78oE.
His horoscope
This small village- Puttaparthi- is fast emerging into
a prominent spiritual and educational centre.
Devotees from all over the world come to Baba for
spiritual refuge. All weather tarmac roads connect Prasanthi Nilayam
to the nearest railway station (Dharmavaram, 40 km) and airport, 180
km.) There is regular train service from all parts of India to
Dharmavaran. Devotees will find no difficulty in reaching
Dharmavaran from any direction; West (Bombay), South (Madras), East
(Calcutta) or North (Delhi) passengers deplaning at bangalore may
reach Prasanthi Nilayam in the buses operated daily from Bangalore
bus station or by taxis which are readily available.
Scheduled buses ply daily from many other points such as
Hyderabad, Anantapur, Sri Sailam and Madras. The ashram is located in
Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh. Details of bus, train and air
schedules can be obtain from the Public
Relations Office.
He, in His infinite Grace and Compassion, responds,
irrespective of caste, creed, religion or status. Baba's birth
was accompanied by strange phenomena, like, a cobra was found under
the child's bed and musical instruments in the house started playing
on their own.
Even as a child baba identified himself with all living
beings. he refused to eat meat and hated the killing of animals
and birds for food. he displayed infinite compassion and generous
in giving charity. He could not stand others suffering. By the age
of eight he organized groups of His age to sing the glory of the Lord
with Bahamans he had composed Himself.
With remarkable miraculous powers manifested in Him,
He was distributing sweets from an empty bag, after worship, as Prasad
and materializing articles, foretelling events etc.
Fearing that he was possessed by some evil spirit, His
family tried to exorcise the spirit by various means involving bodily
torture, all of which He suffered with serenity. During the course
of these events, He declared that he was Sai Baba reborn. The Puttaparthi
village in South India had not heard of Sai Baba of Shirdi, a village
1000 km to the northwest.
Baba from Shirdi
near Bombay .
(Here you also could find about the city Bangalore)
On
20th October 1940, Bhagavan Baba announced that He did not belong
to His family & the Maya. He had assumed had been discarded. He
was going to go to His devotees who were calling Him to launch His
Divine mission.
As his devotees started increasing a series of miracles
emanated from him for the pleasure and well-being of His devotees.
These included plucking a variety of fruits from a tamarind tree (
now, known as Kalpa Vriksha) near the Chitravathi river, curing devotees
of incurable diseases and materializing objects for devotees as symbols
of His Grace.
Miracles of this kind are continuing to this day not
only in India but also in many other parts of the world where people
searching for God are finding in Him the object and fulfilment of
their search.
Babas
emphasis in recent years have been
On
education, to ensure that future generations are brought up with necessary
training for carrying out His mission.
On health -physical, mental & Social - to
relieve humanity's suffering.
On rural development for improving conditions
of living for the weaker sections of Society
To
help devotees in their sadhana (Spiritual effort) which involves
developing Divine love and realizing their inherent divinity,
certain guidelines and a code of conduct have been laid down for
visitors. This helps to establish the discipline necessary to ensure
that they will use the nearness of Bhagavan Baba to further the
progress in their sadhana. Visitors are requested to co-operate with
the volunteers on duty in maintaining the discipline and atmosphere of
the site. Admission of Prasanthi Nilayam and Brindavan is resisted,
and those who do not fall in line with the discipline and code
of conduct may not admitted.

to Babas Divine Will, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or status.
He is above all influences. Recommendation often go against the devotees.
During these meetings, and sometimes also while on his rounds giving Darshan,
Baba may materialize vibhuti (i.e. sacred ash) or any other object for
presenting to the person or for curing such person of any ailment or disability.
Baba sometimes listens and talks to individuals while giving them His
blessings and receives letters from them containing their requests and
prayers. He reads every one of these letters carefully and although He
may not send a written reply. He takes action in appropriate cases. In
interviews he advises them on personal affairs and blesses them.

PRASANTHI
MANDIR (PRASANTHI NILAYAM) the Temple
This
is the central prayer hall and temple - the three domed building in the
centre of the Ashram Compound. The central pathway from main entrance
gate under the Gopuram (tower) leads to this building through an archway.
The Gopuram has the syllable "OM" in different languages and the Swastika
(Symbol of auspiciousness) vertically along the centre with scriptured
figures off celestial beings on either side. The entrance door has wooden
carvings of the Guardian Devas. The figures in sculpture on either side
of the archway depict the different incarnations of Lord Vishnu as
follows:
Matsya
(Fish): The Lord incarnated as fish- wish grew to immense proportions-
to retrieve the vedas- the sacred scriptures of india- from the forces
of evil who had hidden them under the ocean.
Kurma (Tortoise):
The Lord incarnated as a Tortoise ( symbolizing Divine Grace) to support
securely the Mandara mountain - Symbolising the mind in steady contemplation
of the Divine- used as a churning rod by the gods (forces of Good) and
the demons (forces of evil) for churning the ocean of Milk (symbolizing
the cultivation of Sathva Guna in the heart) with the serpent (Vasuki)
as churning rope (symbolizing the senses held under control) to obtain
the nectar of immortality.
Varaha (Boar):
The Lord took up this incarnation to lift up the Earth, which had been
held down under the oceans by the strong forces of inertia and evil represented
by the demon Hiranyaksha.
Narasimha (Man
Lion): This incarnation demonstrated that the Lord was omnipresent,
by defeating the forces of evil (represented by the demon king
Hiranyakashipu).
even as the demon king challenged his devotee son Prahlada to prove that
the Lord appearent from inside the pillar in the form of a Man Lion and
slew the demon king after taking him on His lap (This was to circumvent
the boon which the demon king had won earlier from the Gods that
he would not be slain by any man or animal, on the earth or in the
heavens,
by fire, water or sword).
Vamana (Brahmin
dwarf): The Lord incarnated as a Brahmin dwarf to test the spirit of
humility,
surrender and truthfulness of king Bali, from whom the only aims he asked
were three paces of land. When the Brahmin dwarf covered the entire earth
and the heavens by his two paces, the king readily offered his own head
for the third pace. Thereupon the Lord blessed the king for his devotion
and humility.
Parasurama (with
axe): The Parasurama incarnation (i.e. Rama with the axe (Parasu) was
in response to the appeal of Gods and the sages to relieve them of the
oppression by the Kshatriyas (warrior class). Parasurama with his great
powers defeated the Kshatriyas.
Rama (with
bow): The well known incarnation of the Lord for teaching humanity, the
path of duty and Dharma (righteousness) as depicted in the popular and
famous epic "Ramayana".
Krishna
(with
flute): The well known incarnation of the Lord for teaching humanity the
paths of love, devotion, duty and knowledge, as depicted picturesquely
in the famous and popular epics "Mahabharata" and "Bhagavatham".
Buddha:
This incarnation was for pointing out the evils of ritualism and other
social and moral evils harming society and for laying down the path for
reaching the goal of Nirvana or infinite.
Kalki:
The
incarnation for restoring order and happiness and inaugurating an era
of universal goodness, peace and prosperity in the world in the Kali age.
Facing
the Mandir, and after the archway, is a circular fence enclosing a slightly
raised platform with the blooming Lotus flower on a pillar in the centre
(The idol of Lord Ganesha faces the archway outside the fence). The outermost
circle represents the sands of desire, crossing which the spiritual aspirant
enters, progressively, the next circle (in red) representing anger and
hate, thereafter on to the green lawn of Prema (Love), and after gaining
the broad region of bliss (Ananda), his Kundalini Shakti is awakened,
the lotus of the heart blooms and the supreme flame is kindled, scattering
the darkness of Ajnana (ignorance). The six rings of the pillar in the
centre represent the chakras along which the kundalini Shakti rises towards
the goal.
Figures on the front facing the Mandir,
showing a snake in the beak of a peacock, symbolize the peaceful co-existence
of even natural enemies. Other figures include celestial being of
auspiciousness.
The wooden carvings on the front doors
of the Mandir portray the guardians jaya and Vijaya guarding the gates
of the abode of Lord Vishnu. The sculptured figures of Hanuman (the great
monkey devotee of Sri Rama), Subrahmanya (son of Lord Shiva), Lord
Ganesha and Garuda (the vehicle of Lord Vishnu), adorn the space above
the doors and windows.
Inside the Mandir, the alter of the
idol of Shirdi Sai Baba in the centre mounted on the coils of the serpent
king (Shesha), with the large size portraits of Shirdi Sai Baba and Bhagavan
Sri Sathya Sai Baba on either side (see photo). Figures
in relief of Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna adom the frames above these
portraits.
Idols of Lord Krishna and Lord Ganesha is in centre below the alter. On
the left side of the alter, on the floor, is a life size sculpture of
Shirdi Sai Baba and next to it a small shrine in which are placed idols
and a Shiva Linga (materialized by Bhagavan Baba), forming parts of the
objects of daily worship in the Mandir. Above the alter, along the
wall, are the sculptured figures of Sri Rama, His consort Sita and brother
Lakshmana. At the other end of the prayer hall is depicted in sculpture
the famous scene from the Mahabharata in which Lord Krishna, as the
charioteer,
discourses on the eternal Philosophy (set out in the Bhagavad Gita) to
Arjuna seated inside the chariot. Above this sculpture, along the wall,
are mounted the figures of Lord Shiva and His Consort Parvathi on the
sacred bull (Nandi), with their sons Ganesha and Subrahmanya on either
side.
Along the other walls of the prayer
hall, above the door level, are mounted sculptures of the different incarnations
of Lord Vishnu refereed to above. The door opening onto the balcony on
the first floor of the Mandir depicts the symbols of Sanathana Dharma
(OM), Buddhism (Wheel), Vishnu (Conch) and Christianity (Cross). Facing
the entrance gate on the East side is the temple of Lord Ganesha who is
Traditionally worshipped first on all auspicious occasions to remove all
obstacles.

OUTSIDE THE ASHRAM
Gopalaswamy
Temple
Dedicated
to Lord Krishna as the Cowherd Boy. It enshrines the stone with
which a cowherd was supposed to have hit a cobra for having sucked
the milk from his cow and thereby drawn upon the village the curse
of the serpent. The temple is said to have been built to ward off
the effects of the curse.
This
temple is unique in that it is dedicated to Satthyabhama ( consort
of Lord Krishna ) to whom this type of homage is seldom offered in
any part of India. This temple was erected by Bhagavan´s grandfather
after he dreamt of Satthyabhama asking for shelter.
Dedicated
to the memory of Swamis Father -Peda Venkappa Raju. Weddings and other
functions are held here. Swami resided previously in the building
on this site.
The
marks the birth site of Bhagavan Baba. The Temple was opened
by Baba in 1979.
The
village mosque and the hall opposite were constructed and opened
by Swami on 1978.
Sathya

the Hirijans of the Village, who were displaced as a result of the
unprecedented flood in the Chitravathi River in 1975, have been provided
comfortable shelter by Bhagavan Baba.

Vruksha
This
is as Banyan Tree planted by Bhagavan Baba. A thick metal plate
containing mystic markings was materialized and placed under its
roots by Him in 1950 to help Sadhakas meditating under it. This
tree is atop the hill behind the Mandir and on the left of the road
leading to the Administrative Building of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute
of Higher Learning.
Institute
for Higher Learning (Deemed University)
This
Deemed University, established in 1981 and recognized by the Government
of India, Ministry of education, offers courses of study leading
to the degrees of B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. / B..Ed. and M.A. / M..Sc.
/M.Com./M.B.A., at its campuses at Prasanthi Nilayam, Brindavan
(Bangalore) and Anatapur.
The
Institute has devised modern and up to date courses of study for
its students. To complete the education of the student, moral and
spiritual instruction is imported through integral items of living
like the self reliance programme in the kitchens and dining halls,
attendance at prayers and bhajans and meditation, compulsory sports,
games or yogasanas, and social work like the running of the
dispensary,
co-operative stores and help given in the home for the aged. the
imposing building on top of the hill behind the Prasanthi Mandir,
forming a prominent land mark visible from afar, houses the
administrative offices and meeting halls of the University.

The
Elephant Sai Gita
Beside

strange stories about the elephant. In old times Indian had en
elephant to protect their souls. E.g.. Theosophy grand teacher
H.P. Blavatsky got a white elephant when she arrived in India
18884. This custom dates back to India's golden time "When
mahatmas (great souls) could walk freely on the streets"--Gita.
The
Library
is
situated to The Planetarium and Institute of Higher Learning. One
reading room (as a building ), a Kasturi Reading Room and Library

It
said that Sathya Sai Baba is an AVATAR.
(?) Avatar is the Divine incarnation the descent of a God or some
exalted Being, who has progressed beyond the necessity of Rebirths,
into the body of a simple mortal. Krishna was an Avatar of Vishnu.
Dalai Lama is regarded as an Avatar of Avalokitswara and Teschu Lama
as an Avatar of Tson-kha-pa or Amitabha. There are two kinds
of Avatars, those born from woman and parent less the Anupapadaka.
Even could Dhyani Buddhas.
-"Verily
we have as yet some Avatars left to us on Earth"
In
a Letter from a Theosophical Mahatma. He wrote it to A.P. Sinnett
in 1881
-"When goodness grows weak, when evil increases,
I make myself a body. In every age I come back to deliver the holy,
to destroy the sin of the sinner, to establish righteousness".
Says
Krishna in Bhagavad Gita
-"Difficult indeed is it for the ignorant to
understand the Avatar's glory and power. Only those, who with love
and devotion, worship and meditate at the blessed feet of a Divine
Incarnation can realize the Truth."

time, the Sun crosses the Tropic of capricorn and enters the Makara
Rashi (constellation) on its northward journey for the next six months,
energizing and invigorating all life. this six month period is considered
specially suitable for sadhana.
Sivarathri
About the 12th February
This festival falls on the 14th
night of the dark half of the moon, which symbolizes the mind, is
visible. As the object of all spiritual efforts is the complete dissolution
of the mind (as a prerequisite to self realization), the all night
vigil with bhajans, japa, dhyana, etc. on Sivarathri night represents
that extra effort of the spiritual aspirant which can result in the
complete conquest of the mind, symbolized by the disappearance of
even the little bit of the moon on the following New Moon right.
Sree
Ramnavami
The 24th March
This festival marks the birthday
of Lord Rama, the great Divine incarnation of the Treta Yuga, whose
glory and achievements have been so picturesquely described in the
famous epic Ramayana by sage Valmiki and poets Tulsidas and Kamba.
Janmashtami
The 1st September
This festival marks the birthday
of Lord Krishna, the complete incarnation of the Divine of earth,
whose glory and exploits are described so picturesquely in the famous
epics, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavatham.
Navarathri
or Dasara
About the 8-18th October
This nine day festival is dedicated
to the goddess of Energy (Shakti) worshipped in her three principal
forms as Mahalaksmi and Mahasaraswathi. The number 9 symbolizes the
universal aspect of Divinity (as all numbers have to include one or
more of the numerals 0 to 9, and there are no numbers beyond 9). The
festival symbolizes in three stages the struggle of the soul towards
liberation--the first, where Mahakali is invoked (for the first, three
days) to overcome the evil forces such as desire, anger, greed (Mala),
through action (Karma); the second, where Mahalakshmi is invoked (for
the next three days) to overcome the agitation of the mind (Vikshepa),
which can be done only by calling upon Divine help through constant
remembrance and contemplation (Upasana); and the third stage (the
last three days), where Mahasaraswathi is invoked to overcome
ignorance or illusion (Avarana) through cultivation of knowledge and
wisdom. The final victory is on the 10th day (Vijaya Dashami) symbolizing
the complete victory over the forces of nature and attainment of
the goal. During this festival a Yajna (sacrificial ceremony, "Veda
Purusha Sapthaha Yajna") accompanied by Vedic shantings is held daily
from the fourth day. The sacrificial ceremony symbolizes the sacrifice
of all the animal instincts in man for man's spiritual uplift, before
the Supreme Divine, the Lord of the Vedas (Veda Purusha). The Vedic
chantings extol the Lord and invoke His Blessings and Grace for the
general well-being of all mankind. speeches on spiritual subjects
are delivered by learned speakers, followed usually by the Divine
Message of Bhagavan Baba. Well known artistes also sometimes give
performances as acts of service at the Lotus feet of the lord.
Vaikunth
Ekadashi
About the 18/28th December
This festival marks the famous event narrated in the
Bha-gavatham when Lord Vishnu incarnated as the Tortoise for facilitating
the churning of the ocean of milk by the Gods and the demons to obtain
the nectar of immortality. On this day, the gates of Vainunth (Heaven)
are said to be open for the souls of spiritual aspirants to enter.

Guru, is celebrated in grateful remembrance of the great sage Vyasa
as the foremost Guru (spiritual leader) for his invaluable contribution
to the spiritual literature of India, such as the Mahabharata, the
Bhagavatham and other Puranas.
Onam
The 20th September
This festival, specially important
in Kerala, marks the day on which Bali, emperor of this region, famed
for his deep devot-ion to the Lord and great solicitude for the happiness
and well-being of his subjects, was blessed and granted liber-ation
by the Supreme divine through a personal visit in the form of a Brahmin
Dwarf (the incarnation of the lord as Vishnu).
Deepavali
About the 8th November
This festival of lights celebrates
the destruction of the demon Narakasura (symbolizing evil traits obstructing
spiritual progress) at the hands of Lord Krishna (the Divine).
the myriads of lights symbolize the energizing from one source (Divine
Atma) all the other souls (Jivas) with the supreme Atmic energy. The
crackers usually burst on this occasion symbolize the forcible
driving out of the evil demoniac qualities in man with the help
